Gear Ratio

I had an email from a rider today about what gear ratio people run around Leeds.  He is also from a hilly area so any feedback would be good - Leave your ratio or any tips as a comment

45x 16, mostly flat areas

36 x 16 on a 26" mtb ss. It seems like a good compromise for the hills around here.

anything from 42-16 to 45-16 depending on your riding style if you can spin to win then 42 if your pretty strong on the hills and like hammering the flats (if any in leeds??) then 45 this also depends on if you like to ride with no brakes with the skid patches and everything.

46 x 17 for skidpatches and fast fun. Hills aren't that mucht of a problem and running fast like a dream ;-)

44/18 - great for everything!

Running 48x17 at the moment in Leeds, great for down hill, fast, but uphill can be a bit of a struggle. I reckon somewhere around 46x17 is perfect if you want a fast uphill compromise, with loads of skid patches.

I rode, badly, in both alleycats on 48/18 and ride to work from roundhay to the LGI area everyday on 48/16. Looking forward to the sept. race if the rumours are to be believed!

does nobody use gear inches anymore? i use 42x16 (72") for rides in the dales and my 11 mile commute into harrogate. this may seem low to some but i am a spinner! my 29er runs 34x18 (57") off road and my 26" mtb ran 42x18 (60") for my commute in the snow last winter.

46 15, good all round gear I think, can get you up the hills, and lets you mash on the flat.
